Ranks & Roles

Ringmaster: Head of the Seigniorage Circus, and ultimate veto authority. Master of Ceremonies and main announcer. Develops and clarifies the mission and organization of the Circus. Highest rank and role, delineated by yellow colors, but is generally categorized with blue.

Gaffer: Circus Management and most senior Troupe member(s). Gaffers can be considered the "C-Suite" of the Circus. The Ringmaster is quite often also a Gaffer. Gaffers are qualified and trusted to represent the Circus internally and externally, and function as leaders and managers both internally and externally. Second-highest rank and role, and highest functional role. In addition to the general role played within the Troupe, Gaffers also oversee their own specialized Departments. Gaffers are limited to 4.

Funambulist: Funambulists are senior Troupe members, and are promoted to this rank and role based on a track record of contribution to the community, culture, or knowledge base development of the Seigniorage Circus and its mission. Generally recognized for being immensely valuable to the Circus as a whole. Funambulists may specialize in development, marketing/operations, data analysis, investigation/research, or any other such niche, and be chosen for a Department based on this skill set. They will have expanded permissions, and can function as Circus management. Third-highest rank and role, and second-highest functional role. Funambulist means “tightrope walker,” and this name is chosen to signify and symbolize oversight, observation, separation, and balance. Funambulists will be limited to 24.

Troupe: The Troupe can be used to describe those who have shown a willingness to contribute to the Seigniorage Circus, and have been enlisted into its membership. Troupe may specialize in development, marketing/operations, data analysis, investigation/research, or any other such niche, and be chosen for a Department based on this skill set. Troupe members can be ejected from membership if their behavior trends towards nonparticipation, or if they are found to be misaligned with the Core Values, or in violation of the Code of Conduct. The total limit on Seigniorage Circus membership is 172, of which 144 places are reserved for the Troupe role. Additionally, the "Troupe" is a word that can be used to describe the Seigniorage Circus as a whole.

Spider: Spiders are individuals outside of the Troupe (Gilly) that the Seigniorage Circus regards as capable advisors or consultants, depending on context and relationship(s). Spiders are classified as Gillies and not Troupe due to circumstances like prioritization conflicts, and other technical incompatibilities.

Gilly: Literally, a “guest.” Gilly is a term that can be used both narrowly and broadly, from individually referring to engaged community members without Troupe membership (and may be aspiring to be admitted), to everyone in the world who is not a member of the Seigniorage Circus.
